SIGNIFICANCE OF NAVRATRI COLORS (Navrang of Navdurga)

Navratri is a festival celebrated in honour of Goddess Durga, most powerful feminine power. Celebration of this traditions, especially in states of Maharashtra and Gujarat, is wearing clothes according to Navratri color of the day and observing Navdurga’s significance.

1) SHAILAPUTRI

The first day is the day of Shailaputri Devi. Shailaputri literally means the daughter (putri) of the mountains (shaila).

YELLOW- The color of knowledge & learning. It symbolizes happiness, peace, Mediation, competence & mental development.

2) BHARMACHARINI

Bharmacharini means one who practices devout austerity. She enlightens us in the magnificent embodiment of Durga with great powers and divine grace. 

GREEN- Symbolising peace & happiness, green stabilize the mind. It represent calmness and nature

3) CHANDRAGHANTA

She is charming, has a golden bright complexion and rides a lion. She is the apostle of bravery and possesses great strength to fight in the battle against demons. 

GREY- It is conventional, reliable and practical. Grey is very controlled.

4) KUSHMANDA

Kushmanda means ‘Ku’ = a little; ‘ushma’ = ‘warmth’; ‘anda’ = ‘the cosmic egg’. So she is considered the creator of the universe. The universe was no more than a void full of darkness, until her light spreads in all directions like rays from the sun. 

ORANGE- The most sacred color for the Hindu. Represents fire and as impurities are burnt by fire, this color symbolizes purity.

5) SKANDAMATA

Skanda Mata – the mother of Skanda or Lord Kartikeya, who was chosen by gods as their commander in chief in the war against the demons.

WHITE- It represents purity, cleanliness, peace and knowledge.

6) KATYAYANI

Katyayani was born to Kata (Kata was very famous and renowned in the lineage of saints.) as an avatar of Durga.

RED- It is the color of Shakti (prowess). A red colored dress is put on deities who are charitable, brave, protective, and who have the capacity to destroy evil.

7) KALRATRI

She has a dark complexion, disheveled hair and a fearlessness posture.

BLUE- The deity who has the qualities of bravery, manliness, determination, the ability to deal with difficult situations, of stable mind and depth of character is represented as blue colored.

8) MAHAGAURI

MahaGauri is intelligent, peaceful and calm. It is said that due to her long austerities in the deep forests of the Himalayas her color transformed from black to white.

PINK- A delicate color that mean nice, feminine, and tenderness. It’s a color of beauty.

9) SIDDHIDAATRI

She bestows all types of siddhi (supernatural powers) to her devotees.

PURPLE- Color of purity, fertility, love, beauty, wealth, opulence and power.
